Welcome to the PlayBasicFX FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Question
What is PlayBasicFX ?

    A.  This is the second generation of the PlayBASIC language.  You can think of it as PlayBASIC 2 if you like.   It's designed to retain the familiarly with the original product, while opening up the flexibilities of our second / third generation runtime technologies.  This not allows for faster execution and complex programs, but it finally gives a true plug and play nature to the platform infrastructure.   Allowing users to add 3rd party commands sets and entire engines if required.

Question
Will the PlayBasicFX command set be backward compatible  ?

    A.   Mostly.  The first editions of the command sets (graphics engine) will focus on giving fallback compatibility with PlayBASIC.  Obviously this is important for ensure that the migration of user code is as simple and painless as possible    However,  due to differences between the two products we can't guarantee that all old code will import and run without modification.  So users should expect to need make changes and be pleasantly surprised if their program runs without them.

Question
Are there more graphics modules planned and what API's will they use ?

    A.   Yes, this is one of the features of the new design.  It allows the core command sets to be replaced as plug ins.  Therefore alternative versions of command sets can be produced either in-house or by 3rd parties  running on the graphics API of your choice (Direct3D, OpenGL etc).

Question
Isn't PlayBasicFX already released ?

    A.   No.  At the time of writing, there are only work in progress editions that have been made available to registered PlayBasic users.    These editions encompass a hybrid of our first and secondary generation runtime technologies mixed together, combined an experimental replacement command set.
